My filming process

I started my filming in my bedroom at my house. I decided this was the perfect place to film due to it being quite feminine and I wanted to show innocence so chose this as my location. All of the filming took place in my room except the establishing shot at the beginning of the opening sequence.

My actress Katy Collins came to my house in the evening and we began to film! We first decided on the dress which she would be wearing. I chose the silver dress as it was pretty and girly. We then began to film!

The first shot we decided to film was her striking the match and lighting the candles. This took a few re-takes to get it correct and to achieve the right lighting. The first couple of times the matches wouldn't light so we had to keep trying. On the shot of the candle the camera tries to focus a few times which actually creates a nice effect.

The rest of the filming pretty much went to plan. Halfway through I noticed that not all of my planned footage was going to fit in the 3 minute time space so I had to decide on another appropriate stopping point for my opening and stop filming at that point. Luckily for me this was easy and the shot of the mirror was a perfect ending.

To do my continuity editing I decided that I would take shots of Katy walking to and from the dress from many angles a perspectives so when it came to editing I could make it as smooth as possible and try to get the most effective shots and put them together. I decided the range of camera angles would also be interesting for the audience and help me in editing my final.

When filming Katy picking up the necklace, I took a long shot, medium shot and close up of the action so I could decide which looked better in my edit. I did decide the close up was the best option for me and decided on that. We took the shot several times as the first time her hand wasn't in shot well so the audience would not have been able to have seen the necklace. This was important to me as I wanted to show how dainty the necklace was and fool the audience into a false sense of hope.

When we took the last shot of Katy turning around quick then looking back at the mirror, we made a vital mistake. I decided to write on the mirror before taking this shot, so to avoid the writing being in the shot at the wrong time, I had to decentralize the main character and have her to the side of the frame. This wasn't a huge issue but did  cause a slight inconvenience. We finished out filming there together.

The evening I went outside at dusk and took the establishing shot of my house. I took it to the side of the house panning downwards. I created rain my flicking water in front of the camera. I look several shots of this so I could get the right shot and make it the most effective in my opening.

Improved animatic

I have now re-done and improved my animatic. To do this I changed many aspects of the original to hopefully fit in and adjust accordingly to the feedback I received from my audience and my teachers.

  • I have taken out any speech bubbles I added so it doesn't look like a comic strip and more like an animatic
  • In the last shot where only a scream is heard I took it off and just had a blank square with a scream voice over.
  • I have continued the sound over any voice over it needed to be added to.
  • I took out the second part and added in more shots to the first to make it 2 minutes long exactly and less confusing for the audience.
  • I also added different music to make it more dramatic and film-like.
