Social realism - the pros and cons

Social realism pros:
  • Social realism is all around us. Especially in the news and other forms of media. This is a great chance to take ideas from real stories and cases in the present news and headlines.
  • We know a lot about social realism as it is generally everyday life.
  • There are many estates in Bury St Edmund's which can be used for the filming.
  • You can be very creative with camera angles and also get creative with freehand filming!
  • People would feel more comfortable acting this as they can be relaxed and themselves to an extent.
The con's:

  • Bury St Edmund's is viewed as a middle class area. Seeing as most, if not all social realism films focus on the working or lower classes, finding a suitable area to film may be difficult.
  • You definitely need the right sort of characters for your film! They have to have the right attitude to be part of a film with such a strong meaning.
  • Thinking of a plot for your film may be difficult as many have been done and in fact over used!
  • You have to be very careful about how you portray certain events (such as drug taking) as it may be offensive to others.
  • It could easily seem trailer-like if you're not careful!
